Pet Travel

A pet cat or dog will have to meet certain conditions to be able to enter the UK without quarantine. It will have to be:

  1. Identified with a microchip.
  1. Vaccinated against rabies (but not before it is 3 months old).
  1. Successfully blood tested at a laboratory recognised by DEFRA. Pets may not enter the UK under PETS until 6 months have passed from the date that a vet took a blood sample which led to a successful test result. If a vet signs the pet’s export certificate after the six month period has elapsed, the pet may then enter the UK immediately.
  1. Issued with a PET Passport. A government authorised veterinarian will need to sign and stamp the Rabies Serological Test Page, in the pet passport.
  1. Treated against ticks and tapeworm and fill in the Tick and Echinococcus pages in the pet passport. The treatment must be carried out not less than 24 hours and not more than 48 hours before the pet is checked in to travel to the UK. The pet’s microchip number should be checked before treatment.
  1. Pets must travel comfortably in an airline approved travel crate large enough for the animal to move without restriction.
